Used Freeze Dryers & Lyophilizers
For Sale
Industrial used freeze dryers and lyophilizers for pharmaceutical, food, and biological production — shelf, manifold, and tunnel types from pilot to production scale. All units inspected and available for worldwide export.
Used Freeze Dryers for Sale — What We Carry
SIGMA Process Equipment stocks used freeze dryers for sale and second hand freeze dryer units for industrial buyers — pharmaceutical lyophilization, food freeze drying, and biological product drying. Inventory runs from pilot-scale shelf units to production tunnel systems. Submit an RFQ for current availability and condition reports.
Types of Industrial Freeze Dryers
A shelf (tray) freeze dryer is the standard configuration for pharmaceutical and biotech duty: product is loaded on temperature-controlled shelves inside a vacuum chamber, with an ice condenser mounted internally or in a separate vessel. Manifold freeze dryers — small units drying pre-frozen product in flasks — cover laboratory and pilot work. For high-volume food production, tunnel and large chamber systems process bulk product in trays on trolleys.
Scale runs from laboratory and pilot units with 0.5–5 m² of shelf area up to production lyophilizers with 20–50 m² and tunnel plants rated in tonnes of input per day. Before you buy, remember: shelf area and condenser ice capacity — not chamber volume — determine real throughput.
What Freeze Drying Is Used For
Freeze drying is used for products that cannot tolerate heat: injectable pharmaceuticals and API lyophilization, vaccines and diagnostic reagents, probiotics and enzymes, and premium food products such as instant coffee, fruit, and ready meals. A used food freeze dryer with stainless steel contact surfaces handles the food side; pharmaceutical units are SS 316L with CIP and validation documentation where available.
We supply industrial and laboratory-scale equipment only. We do not carry residential freeze dryer or home units — the smallest systems in our inventory are pilot-scale machines built for factories and research facilities.
Used Freeze Dryer Buying Checklist
- Vacuum system — verify the vacuum pump reaches its specified ultimate vacuum (typically 0.05–0.1 mbar) and check the chamber leak rate; a leak test report should accompany any refurbished freeze dryer.
- Refrigeration unit — confirm condenser coil temperature (−50 °C to −85 °C depending on duty), compressor condition, and refrigerant type; units running phased-out refrigerants may need conversion.
- Shelf temperature control — check shelf flatness, the heat-transfer fluid circuit for leaks, and the control range (typically −55 °C to +70 °C); temperature uniformity across shelves directly affects batch consistency.
- Ice condenser capacity — the condenser rating in kg of ice per cycle must exceed the water load of your largest batch, otherwise the cycle stalls.
- Documentation — for pharmaceutical duty, ask for shelf temperature mapping data, DQ/IQ/OQ records where retained, and material certificates for product-contact surfaces.
Every used freeze dryer for sale from our stock is listed with shelf area, usable shelf dimensions, condenser capacity, refrigeration configuration, and control system details, along with photographs of the chamber interior and skid.
